Are you a good judge of character?
As Maya Angelou famously said, “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.” This wisdom underlines the importance of observation in understanding others, highlighting how actions speak louder than words.
The Art of Observing Character
Observing character is much like walking through a garden, each personality revealing its colors over time. My experience and observations are the lenses through which I understand people—whether they are seniors by age, seasoned professionals, or those with brilliant intellect. I start with respect, but as I watch their behaviors unfold, my thoughts often evolve, guided by the nuances of their actions.
Meeting sophisticated individuals sometimes makes me nervous, as their polished presence carries an undeniable aura. Yet, the ones who truly leave a mark on me are those with well-mannered grace. Their kindness feels like a gentle breeze that lingers, reminding me how much humility and poise matter in forging genuine connections.
What I’ve learned is that understanding character isn’t about instant judgment. It’s about giving people the time and space to show who they truly are. And in that time, I often find moments of surprise—instances where someone’s authenticity shines through and challenges my preconceived notions.
At its core, the journey of observing character is as much about self-discovery as it is about understanding others. It’s a reminder to approach the world with patience and curiosity, embracing the beauty in every encounter, even if it changes your perspective along the way.

A growth oriented message that is a great reminder to approach life with patience, curiosity, and humility.
Through a very thoughtful and beautifully penned article, Neelima rightfully points out the flaws of judging someone too soon. At the same time, the personality that you show and the character that you exude, speak volumes about your own authenticity. So judge not too soon, neither show a false face, the world is yours to conquer, but do it with caution as well as with grace 😊!

Hi Neelima, it is a very well written blog. A reality where almost everybody wants to deny. Inadvertently we observe people’s nature and create our own biases. Just to add if I may, while we observe others, there is someone in the observing us, our persona. It’s a full circle.
Neelima, this piece is both insightful and beautifully written! I couldn’t agree more that actions reveal true character, and patience is key to understanding someone. First impressions may impress, but they’re like glitter—shiny but easy to blow away! It’s the person’s character that sticks with us long after. As they say, don’t judge a book by its cover—or its blindingly polished title! Thanks for this thoughtful reminder to observe with an open mind and a sense of humor.
Thank you so much, Kalyanasundaram! Your kind words mean a lot to me. I’m glad the post “The Art of Observing Character” resonated with you.
