Reflections on Leadership: The Evolving Role of Indian Prime Ministers
Reflections on Leadership
I have always admired the role of the Prime Minister in India, recognizing the immense responsibility they hold in shaping the nation’s path. Over the years, I’ve come to believe that every Prime Minister, during their tenure, has made decisions with the nation’s best interest in mind, given the unique challenges and circumstances of their time.
For example, Jawaharlal Nehru’s focus on building institutions and industrialization was crucial for a newly independent India, while Indira Gandhi’s policies reflected the pressing socio-economic needs of her era. Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s leadership during the economic sanctions following the nuclear tests showcased resilience and diplomacy, while also initiating infrastructure projects like the Golden Quadrilateral, which boosted connectivity and economic growth. The economic liberalization under P.V. Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh addressed a critical economic crisis, setting India on a trajectory of growth. More recently, initiatives like Digital India and Make in India under Narendra Modi reflect the contemporary need to embrace technology and global competitiveness.
This belief in the leaders’ intentions has shaped my political views over time, making me appreciate the complexities of governance. While I don’t always agree with specific policies, I’ve come to understand that decisions are made in the context of limited resources, competing priorities, and the realities of the moment.
At the same time, I’ve also wondered about the growing influence of businesses on policy-making, such as in areas like economic reforms or environmental regulations. This has prompted me to think critically about the balance between governance, industry, and the needs of the people.
