A Journey Through Rhythm and Grace: The Kathak Performance at Triveni Festival
Introduction:
On a serene evening at Ravindra Bharathi, the stage came alive with the timeless elegance of Kathak, as the Triveni Festival of Music and Dance 2025 unfolded. Organized by Surmandal in association with the Government of Telangana and Canara Bank, this event celebrated the rich traditions of Indian classical arts. The evening began with a captivating performance by the talented Mukti Shri, whose artistry set the tone for what was to come.

Opening with Pancham Sawari
The performance opened with the mesmerizing Pancham Sawari, a 15-beat rhythmic cycle. What unfolded was an intricate interplay of rhythm and movement, beginning with graceful shuttles of the head and neck, cascading into powerful footwork that aligned perfectly with the tabla’s beats. It wasn’t just a performance—it was an invitation into the dancer’s world, where every beat had a purpose and every move carried a story.
The Subtle Magic of Parmelu
The Parmelu compositions brought a natural charm to the performance, weaving sounds of nature into the dancer’s movements. It felt like a conversation with the world around us, where every rhythm spoke of harmony. Watching the dancer’s expressions, the joy radiating from her face, and the interplay of her steps with the tabla—it was impossible not to be drawn into the moment.
At one point, the synergy between the dancer and the tabla player was so perfect, it felt as if they were engaged in a lively, rhythmic dialogue. The audience couldn’t help but burst into applause, acknowledging this seamless connection.
Exploring Variations in Pancham Sawari
The evening wasn’t static—it evolved, taking us through various moods and intensities. In one segment, Nagi Thai, the tempo heightened with faster beats, interspersed with moments of subtlety. This delicate balance of high momentum and calm poise created a mesmerizing rhythm of contrasts.
Another variation introduced a pinch of sweet aggression, where the dancer and the tabla transitioned between drops and double beats. It was thrilling, yet never overwhelming—a perfect blend of power and precision.
The segment called Athihai was particularly striking. It felt like a visual symphony, where the abstract rhythm painted stories we could only imagine. The creativity in this composition was boundless, showcasing how the artist could expand within the tala’s framework, making it uniquely her own.
The Grandeur of the Finale
The performance culminated in another rendition of Pancham Sawari, this time as a grand finale. The dancer’s footwork in this segment was beyond captivating—two full minutes of nonstop rhythm that had the audience spellbound. The sheer energy, precision, and emotional depth of the final moments were nothing short of exhilarating.
Storytelling Through Expressions: Abhinaya
The evening also highlighted the emotive power of Abhinaya, where the dancer narrated stories of devotion through her expressions. In the first Bandish, Radha shared her dream of Krishna in “Sapna Mein Aaya Shyam”, her expressions brimming with joy and longing. The second, “Laja Rakho Mera,” brought Meera’s devotion to life, as the dancer seemed lost in a world of Krishna’s love.
These moments were deeply moving, capturing the timelessness of mythology and the universality of devotion. It wasn’t just about the movements—it was about the emotions, the connection to the story, and the ability to transport the audience to another realm.
Reflections on the Evening
This performance wasn’t just an artistic display—it was an experience. The dancer’s ability to combine the technical precision of Pancham Sawari with the emotive storytelling of Abhinaya created a journey that was both powerful and deeply personal. Every composition, from the natural charm of Parmelu to the complexity of Athihai, felt like a chapter in a larger story of rhythm and grace.
