What’s something you do completely differently from how you were raised?
I was raised in a fairly structured environment, where doing what was expected often came before questioning why.
Over time, I have become very different in one important way: I like to understand before I decide.
I want to know the reason behind a choice, think it through, make the decision for myself and take responsibility for it.
I also wish I had learned some practical things much earlier — cooking, understanding clothes and personal style, and simply experimenting enough to know what works for me.
My mother once wanted me to become a police officer. Looking back, I think I might actually have enjoyed a path that combined discipline, responsibility and service to the nation.
Perhaps that is the biggest change: I still value discipline, but today I value judgment just as much.
